Every so often the international office set up small trips for us. On Tuesday there was an opportunity to go to the Cinema and for dinner. We saw Just Go With It (2011) and to be honest- i hated that movie. It was slow and predictable, but nonetheless it was a night out and nice food! I had a generally good day as I got my Media Violence paper back with a B+! My grades so far are slightly unbelievable to be honest.
Wednesday came and yet another guest speaker- i could get used to this! Gary Fincke, winner of Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction in 2003. As part of my Forms of Literature class it was compulsory to attend, but another good experience. Downside was having to write a 2-3 page response which meant even more work to do! Mid-term is hard!
By Friday my slowly dying laptop decided to delete my essay to which i was not amused, but it was only a week until my new laptop arrives along with 2 parents, needless to say my weekend was then non-stop work. Groundhog Phil is still not my friend- although generally it has got milder its still not the spring I was hoping for.
I’m afraid to say this week is a slow week due to the massive work load therefore not much to report on.
When Monday arrived it then became the official countdown time until Las Vegas!!! Could really do with a Cosmo or 6! That or a lifetime supply of Guinness!
Tuesday night was most exciting, as part of my Media Violence class, the lesson was cancelled as we had to attend the Bailey Oratorical Contest http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/13031478. If i didn’t have to attend I probably wouldn’t have bothered, but I am glad I did. It was an amazing performance from 7 students. The Topic was “Who would be the Time’s person of the Year 2010”. So the one’s nominated were... Lady Gaga, Air Travel, Global Communication, Liberal Arts Students, Conflict Minerals, Foreclosure, and Dan Savage. I don’t personally get how some of these count as people but there we go. First place is $1000, Second place $500 and Third place $300 and you will have to watch the link to find out who won....... Apparently, 7 people tried out with Lady Gaga as their person.... it will take some immense Googling to ever understand how she qualifies for person of the year. Should you watch the link, Donna Weimer is my Media Violence Professor.
I realise that no one will watch the link, even though I think you should! (I will know if you have watched it when I ask you! - also, think twice about sending me links in future) First Place was Global Communcation, Second Place was Liberal Arts Students and Third Place was Air Travel. The person who did Dan Savage for Gay Right Activists. He got a standing ovation and a room full of tears. He is an AIDs sufferer after being gang raped in Central Park, NY. He has suffered for 18 years of AIDs. This was his coming out speech after being motivated from Dan Savage.
